The Alzheimer Foundation of America (AFA) is opening the Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center in Amityville – and they are inviting the public to its grand opening.
The AFA is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 24 at 11 a.m. debuting a first-of-its-kind center equipped to assist Long Island families affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
“We want to ensure that the center is there so that families and individuals with this disease have a place to turn to for guidance counseling and support,” said President and CEO Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr.
Located at 149 Schleigel Blvd. in Amityville, the center is a convenient stop for communities in Nassau and Suffolk counties to access its various services. The center offers community programs such as music, creative arts, movement and motion, and brain games.
The center also offers confidential memory screenings for Long Islanders of all ages on Wednesday afternoons. All of the center’s services are free of charge and a schedule of training and programs is available on their website, alzfdn.org/afa-li-center.
“I wanted to ensure that economics is never a barrier for seeking help,” said Fuschillo.
The AFA is dedicated to providing support and services to individuals and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s and other similar dementias. According to Fuschillo, about 60,000 Long Islanders are living with the disease.
Open to the public, the grand opening ceremony is an opportunity for the community to learn more about the mission of the AFA and how the center can benefit them and their neighbors. According to Fuschillo, county and state elected officials are scheduled to appear along with AFA board members – many of them, Long Island natives.
“The center is intended to ensure that nobody goes on the journey alone of Alzheimer’s disease,” Fuschillo said.
