The Massapequa Park Village Board of Trustees approved two community events to be held within the village later this year at its Monday, Aug. 11, meeting.

The board approved a request from the YES Community Counseling Center, located on 75 Grand Ave., to hold the 5K Turkey Trot in Brady Park on Saturday, Nov. 22.

The proceeds of the Turkey Trot will benefit the YES Community Counseling Center and the organization’s efforts to raise awareness, prevent, and treat drug use and abuse.

The board also approved a request from the Greater Long Island Running Club to conduct its annual Ocean to Sound Relay on Sunday, Sept. 21. The Relay will include teams of eight runners as they travel across Long Island. Each participant is expected to run between six and seven miles. Jones Beach State Park field 2 in Wantagh is the starting spot for the race.

The Greater Long Island Running Club, located in Plainview, is Long Island’s largest running club. Its mission is to promote running, physical fitness, and wellness regardless of age, experience, or running ability.

During the meeting, the board also received comments from a resident about the overuse of bikes, mainly on sidewalks, across the village.

“The rules say no motorized bikes in the state preserve and that’s outside the village, but going into village property and coming out of village property, which we lease that one part, it has to stop,” the resident said. “Somebody is going to get hurt in this village and all hell is going to break loose.”

The next village board meeting is set for Monday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m.
