A team of Roslyn High School students earned fifth place and the Robert Ladenson Spirit of the Ethics Bowl Award at the Long Island High School Ethics Bowl, held Jan. 31, at Hofstra University.
The Roslyn team included Captain Safiya Bhuiyan; Brigida Sarcona; Anna Recicka; Daniel Bonilla; and Orla Gajwani. The team was coached by Allyson Weseley.
Unlike traditional debate competitions, the Ethics Bowl emphasizes thoughtful discussion and collaboration. Teams work with their opponents to examine complex ethical dilemmas and develop well-reasoned responses. This year’s cases explored a range of timely topics, including the use of AI therapists, creating accessible pathways in national parks, and high school students’ “passion projects.”
According to event director and host Roberta Israeloff, the goal of the Ethics Bowl is for participants to leave “a little less certain about your beliefs than you were when you arrived,” encouraging open-minded dialogue and deeper reflection.
“Our students spend a lot of time thinking about the cases and preparing their presentations,” Weseley said. “Having that experience is incredibly enriching for them, and it’s rewarding to see them recognized for their achievements.”
Roslyn’s strong finish and the Spirit of the Ethics Bowl award recognized not only the team’s thoughtful analysis but also their respectful collaboration and integrity throughout the competition.
