A 12-year-old boy was one of the two victims who died in a fatal fire in the Village of Hempstead early on Friday, March 13, according to the Nassau County Fire Marshal.

He was located in the basement of a multi-unit building and was brought to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released.

Kenneth Roberts, 42, was also found in the basement and pronounced dead on the scene, the release said.

The names of the deceased have not yet been released.

The Fire Marshal’s office has not released the cause of the fire, but said no fire detectors were observed.

“The residence sustained substantial damage and was deemed uninhabitable,” a release from Nassau PD said. The Fire Marshal’s office said 10 people and one dog were displaced from the building, located at 73 Albemarle Ave.

About 100 firefighters responded to the fire, which took about 90 minutes to extinguish, according to the release.

In addition to the Hempstead Fire Department, mutual aid from West Hempstead, Baldwin, Uniondale, Freeport, Rockville Centre, Mineola, South Hempstead, Elmont, Garden City and Westbury departments were present, according to the Fire Marshal’s office.

No firefighter injuries were reported.
