A stand-up comedy fundraiser to benefit shelter dogs will take place Thursday, March 26, at Governor’s Comedy Club in Levittown.

The event, titled “Comedy for a Cause,” supports the volunteer efforts of The Shelter Connection, a nonprofit organization that assists the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter through fundraising, training and programs that enhance the care and adoption of shelter dogs. North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena and the town board are supporting the fundraiser.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by visiting the shelter at 75 Marino Ave. in Port Washington or by emailing The Shelter Connection’s fundraising coordinator, Elissa Zodi, at elissazodi@gmail.com.

The Shelter Connection, a 501(c)(3) volunteer organization at the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter, was established in 1999 to improve the quality of life for dogs at the shelter and increase adoptions through training and socialization. Volunteers educate the public about the benefits animal shelters provide while also showcasing shelter dogs as loving companions in need of homes.

“There is a major misconception that shelter dogs are incompatible with families, but nothing could be further from the truth,” DeSena said. “I can tell you firsthand how adopting a dog changed my family for the better, and the volunteers at The Shelter Connection go above and beyond to help connect these animals to loving homes. You can have a great night out and help our pups by purchasing a ticket or donating to their wonderful organization.”

Fundraising by The Shelter Connection has led to significant improvements at North Hempstead’s animal shelter over the years. Soon after its founding, the organization used donated funds to improve the quality of dog food, purchase beds for kennels and buy training materials for dogs awaiting adoption.

The group also helped fund a network of nature trails adjacent to the facility so shelter dogs can exercise. Additionally, it helped build the shelter’s outdoor playground, which features a fenced-in play area with hurdles, tunnels, tables and ramps.

The organization has also sponsored numerous events, including open houses, “meet the breed” days, puppy reunions, kids safety days, trail days, health and training lectures and community education programs.
