A previously unheard piece of Harry Chapin’s writing is finding new life through music.

Singer-songwriter Lou Antonucci is set to release “Singing My Songs Alone,” a musical adaptation of Chapin’s poem “Singing Songs Alone,” marking the first time the work has been set to music. Written during the height of Chapin’s career and published posthumously in “The Book of Eyes,” the poem offers an intimate look at the emotional reality behind life on the road—far from the spotlight that defined much of his public image.

The release is authorized by the Chapin Estate and licensed by Warner Chappell Music, ensuring that the adaptation remains faithful to the spirit and integrity of Chapin’s original work.

Rather than reshaping the poem into a conventional song, Antonucci took an unconventional approach: he left the text entirely unchanged. Every word of Chapin’s original poem remains intact, with the music built carefully around its natural cadence and phrasing.

“The poem felt complete as it was,” Antonucci said. “I didn’t want to rewrite it—I wanted to understand it, and then let the music support what was already there.”

The result is a restrained, intimate composition that allows Chapin’s voice—through his words—to remain front and center. Subtle melodic shifts and understated instrumentation mirror the poem’s reflective tone, which explores solitude, longing, and the personal cost of a life spent performing.

The only addition to the original text comes in the form of a single closing line, written to provide musical resolution:

“When the stagehands finally dim the lights, I’ll be bringing my songs back home.”

For Antonucci, the line serves as both a conclusion and a tribute—an acknowledgment of Chapin’s enduring themes of connection, legacy, and the journey of an artist beyond the stage.

Jason Chapin, son of the late singer-songwriter, expressed his support for the project.

“My dad wrote from a very honest place, and Lou clearly approached this with that same respect,” he said. “It’s powerful to hear those words reach people in a new musical setting.”

For many listeners, Chapin remains closely associated with his storytelling, social consciousness, and deep connection to audiences—particularly on Long Island, where his legacy continues to resonate. This new adaptation offers a different perspective: a quieter, more personal glimpse into the performer’s inner life.

“Singing My Songs Alone” speaks to a universal tension—the balance between public success and private reflection. In bringing Chapin’s words into a musical form for the first time, Antonucci creates a bridge between generations, inviting listeners to experience a familiar voice in a new and deeply human way.

“Singing My Songs Alone” will be available April 8 on all major streaming platforms.
