Teams from Great Neck South Middle School placed first and second at the Long Island Regional MoMathlon, and six students earned top honors in the individual rounds of competition.
The regional tournament, hosted by Brookhaven National Laboratory on March 10, featured middle school students from across Long Island competing in team, individual and mix-up rounds of mathematical problem-solving.
In the team competition, South Middle’s Team A placed first and Team B placed second. Members of Team A are Zale Zhang, Bruce Peng, Nathan Yu, Brian Guo and Lucas Zhen. Members of Team B are Hanchen Peter Ding, Alison Guo, Jinxian Dennis Au, Anthony Li and Tobias Lin.
Several South Middle students also placed in the top five in the individual competition. In the lower division, grades 6-7, Tobias Lin placed first, Anthony Li second and Brian Guo third. In the upper division, grade 8, Zale Zhang placed first, Lucas Zhen third, Nathan Yu fourth and Bruce Peng fifth.
Based on their performance, the students will advance to the MoMathlon Tournament of Champions in New York City.
The competition is co-sponsored by the National Museum of Mathematics, Con Edison and Brookhaven National Laboratory. The team’s faculty adviser is Nathan Wong, a science teacher.
