Long Island is getting a splash of high fashion this spring:  The Closet NY will open its first physical luxury resale boutique in Syosset in April. The store will offer high-end consignment women’s wear, featuring curated designer handbags, clothing, shoes, and more.

Husband-and-wife co-owners Spencer and Leah Weinstein started The Closet NY online in 2019, quickly gaining momentum as virtual shopping surged during the pandemic. With their love for the trade and a steadily growing online business, opening a physical store was a natural progression, they said.

“The response has been great so far, and the timing feels right for us to have an in-person store,” Spencer Weinstein said.

“There’s been a gap for curated luxury resale on Long Island, and we wanted to give people another option,” Leah Weinstein added. “Long Island loves high fashion.”

The Weinsteins met at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., where they discovered a shared passion for clothing resale. Spencer had previous experience selling sneakers online, while Leah had honed her resale skills through thrift shops.

Leah Weinstein, 27, originally from Ohio, worked as a social media manager for a jewelry company before turning to luxury clothing resale full-time.

Spencer Weinstein, 29, a Syosset native, worked in marketing for small businesses, before owning and operating a Mister Softee ice cream truck.

The Weinsteins said they wanted to create a store that offers the perfect mix of an engaging community business atmosphere in a professional setting rather than the sometimes impersonal vibe of a huge corporate clothing store.

The layout and feel of the space was important to them as well.

“We wanted a space that’s elevated, welcoming and true to what we’re building,” Leah Weinstein said.

The owners curate the goods in their roughly 1,800-square-foot store based on season, style, and brands, working with wholesalers and clients across Long Island and globally who have incredible clothing collec tions. The focus is on classic and contemporary high-end pieces from design houses including Chanel, Gucci, Hermès and Louis Vuitton.

Because The Closet NY specializes in seasonal apparel, customers can expect a good selection of spring and summer wear for the store’s opening, Leah Weinstein said, adding that they’ll have some special pieces for sale at the in-store opening.

As they gear up for opening day, the couple is preparing to announce a ribbon-cutting date with the Syosset-Woodbury Chamber of Commerce. The owners also invited customers to follow them on Instagram for updates and deals @thecloset_ny.

“We’ve gotten a big push from social media and we’re excited for the opening,” Spencer Weinstein said.
