On April 4, more than 25 adults and children with limb loss ran in the ASPIRE 10 kilometer and 5 kilometer race in Plainview. Hosted by the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC), the 32nd annual edition of the Nationwide Insurance 10 Kilometer Run for ASPIRE is Long Island’s oldest continuously held 10K event.
Amputee runners from Hicksville’s Team A Step Ahead and Junior Team A Step Ahead from across the tri-state region participated in this annual fundraising event for the APSIRE organization. Ranging in age from 2 to 60 plus, the runners were an integral part of this fundraising race. The athlete’s limb loss ranged from single below-the-knee amputations to both legs amputated at the hip.
ASPIRE is a nonprofit organization based in New York that focuses on providing programs that promote fitness and an active lifestyle for children and adults with limb loss. ASPIRE programs include training in sports such as running, track and field, skiing, rock climbing and many other physical activities that promote a healthy active lifestyle.
