Five Women Wearing the Same Dress
A comedy focusing on five bridesmaids at a society wedding in Tennessee. Just after the ceremony, the women are hiding out in an upstairs bedroom. The dialogue in the play is as frothy as the hideous dresses the bridesmaids are forced to wear. There’s Mindy, the groom’s outspoken, out-lesbian older sister; the bride’s bitter sibling Meredith; Georgeanne, the tightly wound, hard-drinking pal; world-weary Trisha; and 21-year-old Frances, who answers every tempting offer of a drink or smoke with “I can’t – I’m a Christian.” All five women have some personal history with the groom, a charming but nasty predator named Tommy Valentine. Presented by the Nassau Community College Theatre and Dance Department through Dec. 18 at the NCC Mainstage Theatre. Performances are at 8 p.m., except for Dec. 18, when it is at 3 p.m. Tickets, which cost $9 per person, are $7 for seniors age 55 and over. Tickets sold at the door for that day’s performance are free for college students who have a current valid ID. These tickets are available beginning one hour before curtain. Box office 572-7676.

On Dec. 16 at 8 p.m. in Garden City’s Cathedral of the Incarnation, the LI Choral Society will continue its 83rd season with a concert featuring a performance of the Advent and Christmas portions of George Frederick Handel’s great oratorio, Messiah. On Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Incarnation, the LI Choral Society will hold an Open Dress Rehearsal with discounted tickets costing $10. The featured soloists are: Matthew Curran, bass, Gregory Mercer, tenor, Jennifer Barsamian, mezzo soprano and Arlene Travis, soprano, Artist-in-Residence. A Festival of Lessons & Carols for Christmas
The Annual Festival of Lessons and Carols at the Cathedral of the Incarnation, will take place at 4 p.m. This traditional service from England will include music sung by all of the Cathedral choirs as well as carols sung by the entire congregation, featuring a variety of both traditional and contemporary carol settings. Christmas Concert
Featuring a brass quintet, pipe organ, piano, timpani and familiar carols conducted by Carl Marucci, organist and pianist. He has performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall. The Candlelight Christmas Concert will feature some of the best known Christmas carols along with classic songs that celebrate the holiday season, including creative arrangements of select pieces from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. It will include organ solos, a piccolo trumpet solo, church bells and narration. Some arrangements were created and have been performed by the internationally renowned Canadian Brass Ensemble. The performance will surely inspire and touch the hearts of all who attend. Complimentary reception will immediately follow the concert. The concert is free (though a free will offering is optional). Anger Management

Exhibits
•The Firehouse Plaza Art Gallery at Nassau Community College presents its 2011 Art Faculty Exhibition, through Dec. 22. The exhibition will highlight Maureen Palmieri and Robert Toedter as featured artists. The theme of the show – Borders: Visible and Invisible – reaches across disciplines to define the many borders that we as global citizens observe, react to, become freed from and are limited by. The exhibit is free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled. Artwork will be on display in the showcases in the College Center Building and the G Building as well as the gallery. •Local award winning artist Philip Costa currently has an example of his work on display at Barnes Gallery, corner of Nassau Blvd. and Cambridge Ave., Garden City. Phil has just completed a well-received one-man art show for The Sage Foundation in Glen Cove where many fellow artists who attended attested to his outstanding treatments of the pastel medium. Commissioned pastel paintings are done from ordinary photographs and then transformed into paintings by Phil’s unique style. The public is invited to visit and view Phil’s work.
Cradle of Aviation Museum
In the world of aviation, signals and coded messages are an important part of how airplanes and air traffic control speak everyday. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a variety of free family activities. Walk through the eight museum galleries and you’ll walk through over 100 years of aerospace history with 75 planes and space craft and a variety of examples of how pilots navigated and communicated from the early days of flight through the space program. Museum activities are free with admission and are available each day from noon to 4 p.m. The museum also is home to the IMAX Dome Theatre and is located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Museum Row. Bereavement Groups

•Group 1: A woman’s bereavement group is available to help women share and learn about their grief. Groups are held on a weekly basis and are facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker.
•Group 2: A 12-week bereavement support group is available for children ages 7 to 9. Groups will be held on Saturdays and are facilitated by a licensed social worker.
NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence
The Coalition is a member agency of the Garden City Community Fund, United Community Fund of Great Neck, Community Chest of Port Washington and United Way of LI. Call 222-2293 for information the following:
•Support groups with individual counseling for incest survivors and survivors of rape and sexual assault. Services are confidential and free of charge. These services are also extended to family members and partners of survivors.
•The coalition operates a safe home for battered women and their children. The Coalition’s Safe Home for Abused Families provides shelter, advocacy and legal assistance, in a safe, warm, supportive, attractive environment. Call the 24-hour hotline 542-0404. The hotline and all services are free and confidential and a counselor can help you find safety.
•If you are 60 or older and suffering from abuse, mistreatment or neglect at the hands of family members or someone who is living with you, help is available. Epilepsy Foundation
Located at 506 Stewart Ave. (739-7733) the following is offered:
•Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. These shows are appropriate for the 3rd and 4th grades levels but can be tailored to your needs. Programs are also available for junior and senior high classes. Call Janet Romeo, ext. 145.
