Owl Prowl

Winter is here and has brought crisp cool air, short days, and owls. It is time again for the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center, 134 Cove Rd., Oyster Bay, to offer the ever-popular Owl Prowl programs. These popular programs begin with a live owl presentation allowing participants to learn about and get an up-close look at these otherwise secretive hunters of the night. Learn about the Eastern Screech and Great Horned Owls. After the presentation, participants will venture outside to listen for the calls of the owls and attempt to attract these wild creatures closer. This is a great evening program for people of all ages. Owl Prowls make a great date night, family fun night, or parents’ night out. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Registration required. $7 members; $10 nonmembers. To register call 922-3200. Also on Jan. 28.

Tiffany: Tastemaker of the Gilded Age:

Franklin Hill Perrell, executive director of the Roslyn Landmark Society and past curator of Nassau County Museum of Art, returns to the museum to present Tiffany: Tastemaker of the Gilded Age, a talk on Louis Comfort Tiffany of Laurel Hollow whose paintings are on view in a major exhibition at the museum. Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) created light-filled works suffused with Orientalism and employing sensuous Art Nouveau lines. His paintings and decorative arts contrasted sharply with the era’s prevailing dark Victorian décor and had a powerful influence on the evolving aesthetics of the wealthy and famous of the Gilded Age. Tiffany’s influence on decorative and fine arts was previously explored at the museum in Tiffany and the Gilded Age, an exhibition curated by Perrell. The talk is at 3 p.m. at NCMA, One Museum Dr., Roslyn Harbor. Admission is $15 (members $5) and includes admission to the museum. Call 484-9337.

There will be a “Blessing and Wisdom Red Envelope” containing a Tzu Chi memorial coin for the year of the dragon for each attendee. Each attendee can also obtain a pledge card to donate as little as $5 each month to help support life-changing services, relief efforts and charity programs around the world, as part of a new fundraising campaign sponsored by the Tzu Chi Foundation, USA, a nonprofit charitable organization (http://www.thepower5.org/). 7 p.m. at the Tilles Center, LIU University, C.W.
