Man drove vehicle into police car in school parking lot, cops say
Robbery Squad detectives reported the details of two arrests for a robbery that occurred in Hicksville on Tuesday, March 20 at 11:52 a.m.
According to detectives, Remick Menjivar, 18, of Freeport, approached a male victim, 26, who was in the driveway at his Hicksville residence, produced a handgun and demanded the victim’s keys to his 2006 Infinity. The victim complied and the defendant drove off in the victim’s vehicle, said police. At the time of the robbery, police said the victim observed Edwin Flores, 20, of Hicksville, near his home, standing outside of a 2011 Toyota Corolla and looking around nervously. Both vehicles then fled the scene at the same time, said police.
A short time after the robbery, Bureau of Special Operations Police Officers located the stolen Infinity being operated by Menjivar on Jerusalem Avenue and Newbridge Road. After attempting to pull the vehicle over, the defendant attempted to elude officers and drove into the parking lot of Harold D. Fayette Elementary School in North Merrick, where Menjivar then drove the Infinity head-on into a Bureau of Special Operations vehicle before crashing into the school. The defendant fled the vehicle and after a short foot pursuit officers apprehended the defendant, who was carrying a loaded handgun in his waistband, police stated. The school was put on lockdown for an hour and parents were notified that no children were injured.
Subsequent investigation led detectives to the 2011 Toyota Corolla on Mount Avenue in Freeport, which was reported stolen in New York City on March 16. Flores and an additional subject, Shameik Howard, 20, of Freeport, were observed entering the vehicle and placed under arrest.
Defendant Menjivar was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and released. Three Bureau of Special Operations officers were injured and transported to a local hospital. One sustained a head injury and has been admitted for observation and the other two officers sustained leg, head, neck and back injuries and were treated and released.
Menjivar and Flores are each being charged with first-degree robbery, two counts of second-degree robbery, criminal use of a firearm-first degree and criminal possession of a weapon-second degree. Menjivar is additionally being charged with three counts of second-degree assault, reckless endangerment-first degree and resisting arrest. Flores is additionally charged with criminal possession of stolen property-third degree and criminal possession of a weapon-third degree. Howard is being charged with criminal possession of stolen property-third degree. All three defendants were arraigned on Wednesday, March 21 in First District Court, Hempstead.
