St. Mary’s High School student Lindsay Marrone gave an inspiring talk at the fall meeting of the Manhasset American Legion Women’s Auxiliary about her participation in the Empire Girls State 2013.
Marrone, through an ALWA competition, received a scholarship to participate in the week-long recreation of our New York State government and its various structures. Marrone said that much bonding went on among the participants and the experience truly fostered a greater appreciation for our democratic system of government and our ability to vote in free elections. She acted as District Attorney in mock trials and found it most valuable since she is considering becoming a lawyer for her future career plans.
The EGS attendees also had presentations on public speaking, how to properly dispose of the American flag, and other important civic information. All of the Empire State girls had to give speeches and campaign for key government positions. Marrone found this was a real education in how important it is to be an informed voter and to always exercise one’s right to vote. Once elections were held and the girls secured their positions, the New York State Assembly was recreated and sessions were held to deal with governing issues.
Lindsay found the week very fulfilling and educational and a truly valuable experience to have had courtesy of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary EGS Scholarship Program. She is grateful to have entered and won the competition for 2013 and it has given her more appreciation and a deeper insight into how our State Government works.
The ALWA members enjoyed Lindsay’s report and she was congratulated by President Pat O’Brien and Vice President Elizabeth Parrella along with the other Executive Officers. Meeting attendees got to congratulate Marrone and meet her after her presentation while photos were being taken for the press and chapter archives.
