Sabina Lotlikar never imagined she’d find herself competing in a pageant. The 19-year-old from Hicksville was more used to spending her time cooking, playing video games and working out than walking in heels in front of hundreds of people. But that all changed this year when Lotlikar decided to compete in the Miss LI pageant, an experience she describes as unforgettable.
“It was so nerve-wracking because I’ve never done anything like this, but I’m so glad I went through it and was dedicated to it. It was amazing,” she says.
Lotlikar’s journey to Miss LI began last year after watching the Miss NY Pageant. Inspired, she decided to look up any local pageants. She found out about Miss LI and applied on a whim. She was one of 300 applicants trying for 16 spots.
“I just put in my name, it was so random. But Lori Thomas, the director, actually emailed me and we met and I was picked to be in the pageant,” says Lotlikar.
In the months leading up to the pageant on Aug. 10, Lotlikar said she had her share of fears and nerves. One of her biggest concerns was meeting the other girls competing in the pageant, a fear that was quickly resolved.
“I was so nervous because I didn’t know how the other girls were going to be, but they ended up being super nice and so sweet,” Lotlikar said. “My favorite part of the whole experience was meeting all these girls who were just like me.”
The pageant included a swimsuit, gown and interview portion. Instead of a traditional evening gown, Lotlikar wore a sari to represent her Indian heritage.
“I wanted to stick out and represent my country and town,” she said. “There are a lot of Indian people in Hicksville too.”
Though Lotlikar didn’t win the crown, she did take home the Director’s Award, which honors an outstanding participant who has helped others.
“(Sabina) is nothing short of an exceptional delegate. She has been an absolute pleasure to have in the system and is a wonderful role model for young women,” said Thomas.
Lotlikar says that while she may not do another pageant again, it showed her all she could accomplish.
“It taught me that staying dedicated and motivated brings out the best in you,” Lotlikar said. “I’m more determined to do stuff like this, I didn’t think I could do it until I challenged myself.”
