Students in grades kindergarten through 12 were welcomed back with open arms to all 10 of the Syosset School District’s buildings on Sept. 2.
From Robbins Lane Elementary to Syosset High School, teachers and principals were on hand to greet and help students. At J. Irving Baylis Elementary School, the walls were papered with welcome back messaging and slogans of inspiration. At Berry Hill Elementary School, road signs pointed students toward academic and personal success.
Second-graders learned the roots of Spanish at South Grove Elementary School, while students sang along with the teacher to help learn one another’s name at Walt Whitman Elementary School.
The first day of school also brought boxes of school supplies and parents snapping photos of their children heading off to start the new year at Village and A.P. Willits Elementary schools.
Incoming sixth-graders at H.B. Thompson and South Woods Middle schools began the next chapter of their academic lives, changing schedules and using lockers for the first time.
At Syosset High School, students in AP Physics kicked off the first day with a “Marshmallow Challenge.” The challenge divided the class into two teams, each with 20 pieces of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string and one marshmallow. Each team had to design and build the tallest marshmallow-supporting structure possible using only those materials. As you can see in the photos, the students (and their marshmallows!) rose to the occasion.
“The first day went off without a hitch,” said Dr. Tom Rogers, Syosset’s superintendent of schools. “It’s always exciting to see the enthusiasm on the faces of all the children as they begin a fresh new year. If the first day is any indication, all signs point to a fantastic 2014-15 school year.”
