Help The Vets

Clothing Collection For Veterans

I am a Girl Scout in Troop 527 assisting the Manhasset American Legion Auxiliary with a clothing drive to assist struggling and homeless veterans on Long Island.

A collection of gently used men’s winter clothes will take place during the first full weekend of November on Nov. 7 and 8. Bins will be placed outside two locations—The American Legion Hall at 27 Bayview Ave. and the back door of Raindew in the parking lot located off Locust Street.

Over 3,000 American Veterans on Long Island are jobless and many times also homeless. A Veterans Stand Down is similar to a fair in which the veterans can visit various stations that provide them with assistance in securing entitled benefits, job counseling and legal advice. Clothes and food donated from the community are also available to the veterans, as well as haircuts, medical screening and enrollment in the Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system. Veterans also receive assistance with the health care system and dental cleaning.

The Veterans Stand Down will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at the Freeport Armory, located at 63 Babylon Turnpike in Freeport.

Please take the time to look through your closet and donate one or more items. This is a perfect way to clean out your closet and help a veteran in need.

For further information, please contact Pat O’Brien, president, Manhasset American Legion Auxiliary, at patobrien17@msn.com or 516-850-5702.

Thank you for your assistance.
