In honor of Human Rights Day, fifth-grade students at John H. West Elementary School in the Plainedge School District hosted a human rights gallery for peers and guests to visit.

After an extensive unit on human rights, each student put together an essay, interactive presentation and speech to share, which were all displayed in a museum-style format throughout the fifth-grade hallway and classrooms. Projects covered topics such as defining human rights, the United Nations and important people who impacted the movement.

Dec. 10 has been designated as Human Rights Day nationwide, as it commemorates the date on which the UN General Assembly adopted the UniversDSC_0004al Declaration of Human Rights, proclaiming its principles as the “common standard of achievement for all peoples and nations.”

Fifth-graders were labeled as “youth delegates” for the day and shared video presentations and artistic presentations of their work with guests.
