I am Jean-Baptiste Carelus — a proud husband, father of three, first-generation Haitian-American, and a longtime resident of the Town of Hempstead. After graduating fromHempstead High School in 1987, I have spent my life giving back to the community.
With 20 years of experience in financial services and a Master’s in economics, I currently work as a senior collateralized loan obligation analyst with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. I also founded my own consulting firm that provides expert witness and strategic support in complex financial litigation.
Throughout my life here in the Town of Hempstead, I have committed myself to helping my community in a number of ways. I currently live in West Hempstead, where I volunteer as a firefighter and EMT with the West Hempstead Fire Department.
I am alector at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a proud brother of the Sigma Phi Rho Fraternity, Inc. Being a firefighter has taught me that public service is more than just titles — it’s about answering the call, standing with your neighbors, and working together when it matters most.
Statement on why you are running
I am running becau se I believe the Town of Hempstead’s District 1 deserves good government — government that listens, takes action, and delivers real results for realpeople. I envision a District 1 where young families choose to plant roots, seniors feel safe and supported, small businesses thrive, and every resident is proud to call this township home.
What are the top three issues you’re focused on and what will you do to fix them?
Taxes and Affordability
Taxes and affordability remain a top issue for me as we are all feeling the effects of record inflation and rising costs. As a father of three, my family and I are getting hit with increased prices every step of the way.
From grocery prices to gas rates, we need responsible leadership who will not only control taxes, but CUT taxes. That is w hy I amproud to support Supervisor John Ferretti and his tax-cutting budget that will reduce the overall tax levy by $5 million.
This is an example of the type of leadership needed in the Town of Hempstead, and I look forward to working with him to lower taxes while still maintaining full governmental services. With my decades of experience in finance, I canhelp further our mission of cutting taxes.
Expanding Hempstead Works
I’m committed to expanding Hempstead Works and bringing career opportunities directly to our neighborhoods. I’ll work to bring job training programs, career counseling, and job placement workshops into our local communities so residents can access good-paying jobs close to home.
By connecting young people, working parents, and career changers with employers and workforce programs, we can strengthen our local economy and help families build better futures right here in Hempstead.
Strengthening Public Safety
As a first responder, I know what it takes to keep our communities safe. I’ll continue working side by side with law enforcement to identify local concerns, expand patrols, and improve communication between officers and residents.
My goal is to make sure every neighborhood has the resources and presence it needs to prevent crime, respond quickly in an emergency, and ensure every family feels safe and protected.
