On Monday, Oct. 18 the Lady Dragons of Division Avenue High School captured the conference 4 championships with a 1-1 tie with Garden City. Junior Maggie Carew scored the only Blue Dragon goal on a corner kick from junior Krista Fitzpatrick. Carew and Fitzpatrick are Nassau County All Stars from last season and are looking to repeat that feat this year. This was a hard fought battle that saw junior Sue Ballantyne go down with a season ending injury. Ballantyne is one of the leading scorers in Nassau County and her injury will change the on field look for the Dragons.
Another major contributor to the victory was junior Joanna Capitelli. She has been a valuable asset all year long in the Blue Dragon midfield and is playing all star caliber soccer. Also adding to the Dragon success this season are junior newcomers Courtney Boneillo and Rachel Murdukhayev. Boneillo is part of a very tough defense while Murdukhayev adds power to the offense.
This is the first time in Division Avenue Soccer history that a team has won the conference title three years in a row! It is also the 10th conference championship and 21st playoff bid in the programs history.
