For the sixth time, and presented by Nina Van Erk (far left), executive director of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), Garden City has received Scholar/Athlete Team School of Distinction Award. To qualify, each of the high school’s 32 varsity teams needed to achieve a collective average GPA of 90 or higher. Of the six schools in Nassau County who received an award this year, at 32, Garden City had the highest number of varsity teams. The award was presented on Dec. 8 at NYSPHSAA’s December Zone 8 meeting to (left to right) Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Feirsen, Garden City’s Director of Athletics and Physical Education Nancy Kalafus, and high school Assistant Principal Kevin Steingruebner.
