Eppich matches career high
Senior guard William Cheshire stole a Plainview JFK pass with 87 seconds remaining and drove the length of the floor for a layup to give the MacArthur boys basketball team a one-point lead and the Generals held on for a 46-44 road win Dec. 20.
After missing the front end of one-and-one free throws with 30.1 seconds remaining, junior guard Gerard Cunningham bounced back by drawing a critical charge with 14.0 seconds left to return possession to the Generals. Cheshire then netted the final of his game-high 15 points at the free-throw line. MacArthur withstood a Plainview missed shot at the buzzer to improve to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in Conference AA-II.
Senior guard Tyler Eppich had 11 points, matching the career high he also netted against Plainedge as a sophomore. Eppich also blanketed Plainview point guard Jared Bursky on the defensive end of the floor. Senior forwards Dan Svenelid and Kevin Roach contributed seven points apiece.
The Generals rebounded from their lone loss of the season, a 41-36 defeat at Calhoun on Dec. 16. That game, MacArthur had rallied to pull even with 1:58 remaining in the fourth quarter on a field goal from Eppich that capped a 14-0 run. Cheshire hit three 3-pointers during that late-game surge.
MacArthur completes its non-league schedule Dec. 30 at Valley Stream North before returning home to face league opponents Port Washington on Jan. 3 and Baldwin on Jan. 6.
