Congratulations to Garden City High School senior Taylor Hennig for being named the newest Capital One/News 12 Scholar Athlete. Taylor, a three-season athlete, becomes Garden City’s 36th Scholar Athlete since News 12 began the academic-athletic highlight segment. She was featured on the April 10th broadcast.
In varsity soccer, Taylor excels, serving as the team’s senior captain. She played a pivotal role in 2010 on the team’s road to the state finals where they won Garden City’s first state championship.
In both winter and spring track, Taylor has been a team member for four years. For winter track, she is the senior captain, was named a two-time All-American, a 4x400m relay National Champion (2010), National Sprint Medley Champion (2011), a two-time All-State second place in the 4x400m relay (2009), and 4x800m Champion (2010) and 4x400m Relay (2010) Champion at the Millrose Games.
In spring track, Taylor is the senior captain, All-State 4x400m Relay Champion (2009, 2010 and 2011), and a 4x800m Relay Champion, setting a New York State record in 2010.
Taylor is a member of the National Honor Society, a College Board-recognized Advanced Placement Scholar, and a three-year member of the Peer Education leadership program.
“Taylor is an all-around great athlete, student and person,” commented Athletic Director Nancy Kalafus. “Aside from leading the track team during races, she is also a team leader in practice. She encourages her teammates to give their all during drills, workouts and in the weight room. At meets, she is either by the track cheering on her teammates or giving the younger members of the team advice on their racing strategies.”
Congratulations to Taylor Hennig — a true Garden City champion on the field and in the classroom.
