The passing of former Assemblywoman and former North Hempstead Town Supervisor May Newburger signals the end of an era.
May Newburger was able to accomplish terrific things, especially in the Town of North Hempstead. She had the foresight to envision a state-of- the-art golf course, now known as Harbor Links, and as a tribute to her the road leading to Harbor Links has been renamed May Newburger Way.
She was the first woman North Hempstead Town Supervisor and in that position she was also able to negotiate a deal between Town of North Hempstead Bar Beach and Nassau County to purchase the Nassau County Beach and expand the entire area now known as North Hempstead Town Park so that the entire boardwalk now follows the waterfront and all residents of North Hempstead can fully enjoy the ability to walk or run the boardwalk waterfront area.
Plus, a special area has been etched out in honor of her and it is called May Newburger Cove, which is so appropriate because she was so active in protecting the area ground water. She is survived by her son and a memorial service is planned for the end of September.
