Swingin’ Into Spring
Friends of the Garden City Public Library will sponsor a free concert by vocalist/pianist Mitch Kahn. A veteran performer who has appeared in dozens of New York City venues including The Rainbow Room, Sardi’s and the Copacabana, Kahn’s current show is titled “Springtime in Song.” He’ll be tapping into the Great American Songbook to play timeless classics like “Younger Than Springtime,” “Blue Skies” and “It Might As Well Be Spring.” The concert will be performed on Thursday, March 21, at 2 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library at 60 Seventh St. Seating and parking is limited and on a first-come basis. Epilepsy Workshop
The Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island will feature Josiane LaJoie, M.D. at a workshop discussing the practical aspects to caring for a child with epilepsy. Dr. LaJoie is the chief of pediatric epilepsy at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York and an assistant professor of neurology. The workshop will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island at 506 Stewart Ave. in Garden City. Training hours are available for Medicaid Service Coordinators. Sale To Benefit Library

Good Friday Walk
Join the annual Christ Episcopal Church Good Friday Walk to raise awareness of the hungry and homeless on Long Island and to raise donations for the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN). Meet at the corner of Jefferson Street and Chester Avenue, three blocks west of New Hyde Park Road in Garden City, at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 29. Historic Study
Mercy Medical Center is seeking local residents to participate in an historic study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations. Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65, who have never been diagnosed with cancer, are needed to participate in the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) being conducted by the American Cancer Society. The project will enroll a diverse population of up to a half-million people across the United States and Puerto Rico to help researchers to better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. Mercy will be a local enrollment location at which participants can join the study from 4 to 8 p.m. Those taking part will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form; complete a brief survey; have their waist circumference measured; and give a small blood sample. Prior to the on-site enrollment, individuals will complete an online comprehensive survey that asks for information on lifestyle, behavioral, and other factors related to their health. Those interested in participating can pre-register on line at: www.cps3LongIsland.org. Participants will receive follow-up surveys to complete every few years. Researchers will use the data from CPS-3 to build on evidence from earlier American Cancer Society studies that played a major role in understanding cancer prevention and risk, and contributed significantly to the scientific basis and development of public health guidelines and recommendations. Pedaling For Progress
Long Islanders can put their old bicycles to good use by donating them to Pedals for Progress, a program that rescues unwanted American bicycles and sends them to communities overseas. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island with the children and teen programs of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island will accept donations of bicycles and sewing machines at the Ethical Humanist Society, 38 Old Country Rd., Garden City (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the blue water tower). Each person who donates a bicycle will also be asked to donate $10 per bike (tax-deductible) to help defray the cost of shipping the bicycles. The Garden City Teacher Association (GCTA) is hosting its 4th Annual GC For A Cure Run/Walk on at Garden City High School. The 5K Run/Walk will take place at 9 a.m. and the 1.5 Mile Run/ Walk will start at 9:15 a.m. All Race/Walk proceeds will benefit Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). In addition, Uniting Against Lung Cancer will be hosting Kites for a Cure, a fun family kite fly to support their lung cancer research grant program. Seniors: Tea For Two
Garden City Public Schools will hold its Fourth Annual Afternoon Tea for Senior Citizens and Past Parents on Thursday, May 9 from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. The suggested dress code is suit jackets with ties for gentlemen and Sunday dresses with hats for ladies. Tickets for this event are free to Garden City School District senior citizens and past parents, but limited to two per person. There are two ways to acquire tickets for this year’s event: Guests can request tickets by mail by filling out and returning the form on page 20 of the 2013 Spring Continuing Education brochure. The bright yellow brochures will be mailed to all Garden City homes shortly. Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program
If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State. Folk Dance Classes
International folk dance classes for beginners and intermediates are offered on Tuesday mornings in February at the Ethical HumanistSociety of Long Island. Classes are from 9 to 11 a.m. and will feature dances from many different countries. The first class began on February 5. There is a suggested donation of $5 for each class. Free Breast Cancer Support Group In February
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is offering a new support group for anyone who has done genetic testing and tested positive for breast cancer. The group will meet on Monday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for eight consecutive weeks, beginning on Feb. 25. There is no cost for the group; however pre-registration is required. Monthly Cancer Support Group
Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. (Please note the new location for 2013.) The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support. Furniture Needed
The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, 109 Eleventh St., Garden City, is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture, and show it to Kris or Jill at the shop (516 746-8900). Consignees get 50 percent of the selling price. Parking is convenient because the shop is located on the lower level of the Garden City Historical Museum.
