BOCES student Rene Perdomo of Port Washington was among “exceptional” students honored with the George Farber Outstanding Student Award. Farber was a former Nassau BOCES board president.
Rene earned the award for his passion, perseverance, enthusiasm, outstanding character and academic achievement, as well as his willingness to help others, BOCES District Superintendent Thomas Rogers said. Rene received the award during a ceremony at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts.
Rene is a role model for his fellow classmates at the Nassau BOCES Center for Community Adjustment, Rogers said.
“He is considerate, helpful, supportive, cooperative, caring and respectful. He shows pride and accomplishment in reaching his goals, one of which—becoming a U.S. citizen—he achieved this year. Rene is a mature young man who demonstrates kindness, a quiet strength and a gentle heart.”
The exceptional students exemplify the very best of Nassau BOCES, Rogers said of the honorees at the awards ceremony. “They have shown the true spirit of George Farber as they have bounced back from adversity, shown kindness to other students, exhibited an excellent work ethic, shown commitment to their work, been eager to share their knowledge and made contributions to their communities.”
Outstanding students have been earning this award since 2007. It stands as a memorial to Farber, whose passion and drive for improving the lives of students at Nassau BOCES was only surpassed by his love and care for them, Rogers said.
Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, from 1971 to 2009.
“The students we honor today have shown passion and drive to progress towards personal and professional goals,” said Nassau BOCES Board Member Susan Bergtraum. “They have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their courses of study, exemplary characteristics, including honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards, and commitment to community and school improvement.”
