It Was The Summer Of ‘69
The Summer of ‘69 Exhibit is on display through Monday, Sept. 1 at Garden City’s Cradle of Aviation Museum located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd. One of the most tumultuous decades in American history came to a close in the summer of 1969. The 1960s were characterized by a very real threat of nuclear war, political assassinations, civil unrest and was underscored by a long war with seemingly no end. Three seminal events occurred that summer which brought pride, hope and happiness to a tense nation whose future seemed uncertain. They were the Apollo 11 Moon landing, the Woodstock Festival and the Miracle Mets. The exhibit features photographs of the Apollo missions on loan from George Tibball, Woodstock photographs and artifacts from Elliott Landy and the Museum at Bethel Woods, nostalgic artifacts including a Armstrong Space Suit, Mets memorabilia and more. Garden City’s Department of Recreation and Parks is happy to announce the schedule of its concert series “Summer Music on the Village Green.” The concert series will be held at the gazebo on the corner of Stewart and Hilton Avenues. Concerts are held on Thursdays beginning at 7:15 p.m. Concerts are held rain or shine. In the event of less than perfect weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall, 295 Stewart Ave.

A screening of the 2005 geopolitical thriller Syriana starring George Clooney and Matt Damon will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library. Lunch And Learn Workshop
Garden City’s Janney Montgomery Scott will be hosting this event at noon as a means of helping attendees to learn about aging with dignity with someone who cares. The following panelists will be monitoring this discussion: Victoria Meyerhoffer (Nassau County Office for the Aging), Jeannie Doherty (AgeWell New York), Kip Kirby (Senior Medicare specialist) and Thomas Lake (Lincoln Financial). North Shore Audubon Bird Walk At Garden City Bird Sanctuary
The bird walk meets up at 9:30 a.m., at the site opposite 181 Tanner’s Pond Rd. in Garden City. There will be plenty of parking right on Tanners Pond opposite the main gate. Feeders will be full, and a bit of grape jelly will be on a couple of perches. Copies of the center’s bird monitoring forms will be available, as there have been more than 100 species identified at the bird sanctuary. Trip To Broadhollow Theatre To See Cats
Participants will travel by recreation bus to Elmont’s Broadhollow Theatre for an afternoon showing of the hit Broadway show Cats. The cost of this performance will be $20, checks only, made payable to Broadhollow Theatre. Please note, once the fees are sent to the venues, they are not refundable so make your selections carefully. All trips are open to senior residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City only.
