Hempstead town officials recently announced plans to improve the roadway along Longfellow Avenue in Levittown.
“One way we invest in our communities is by improving our roadways,” said Town Supervisor Kate Murray. “Upgrading our streets saves money in the long term, while making roadways safer and more aesthetically pleasing for neighbors.”
Construction is slated to begin as early as this month and is expected to be complete by October. The project will include repairs to Longfellow Avenue and Byron Place, as well as portions of Milton and Emerson avenues.
“Enhancing safety and quality of life is paramount,” Murray added. “Through our ongoing capital program, we’ll continue to make improvements that will benefit our neighborhoods for years to come.”
The roadway improvements come as a part of the town’s $20 million capital improvement program, at a cost of $550,000. The project will include new asphalt pavement and the construction of new pedestrian access ramps at all intersections, as well as the installation of new curbs and driveway aprons.
All of the work performed will be under contract secured through the state required competitive bidding process.
Although the town looks to maintain normal traffic flow at all times during the construction, some disruption of traffic and temporary disuse of driveways cannot be avoided. Town officials have assured that any areas disturbed by the construction will be fully restored upon its completion.
“We respectfully ask neighbors for their patience and understanding when work begins on their streets,” said Town Councilman Gary Hudes. “We’re confident that neighbors will be pleased with the final results of the project.”
