Courts & Crime Greenport Crash Kills Pedestrian By Timothy Bolger Posted on September 19, 2014 An 86-year-old Laurel man was fatally struck by a car while crossing a road in Greenport on Thursday evening. Southold Town Police said a 41-year-old man was driving eastbound on Route 48 when he hit Howard Meinke at 7:45 p.m. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was not charged, but the investigation is continuing. Meinke was the ex-president of the Nork Fork Environmental Council.
