Girls Who Code Club

The Girls Who Code Club will offer computer science education and technical skill development to girls in sixth through 12th grade. The club will meet on Saturday afternoons from 2 to 4:45 p.m. in the computer lab on the lower level of the library, located at 60 Seventh St. Meetings will continue on April 17 and 25, May 16, 23 and 30 and June 6 and 13. There is no cost to participate in the club but the club size is limited to the first 20 girls who register. Please register at www.gardencitypl.org. Bring your library card with you to each meeting. Violinists Eva Gruesser, Rohan Smith and Katja Stroke-Adolphe along with pianists Mirella Gruesser-Smith, Marija Stroke and Bruce Adolphe present this program featuring pieces by Prokofiev, Beethoven, Brahms and more. 3 p.m. $15, $10. $12. Marvelous Movie Matinée

A screening of the 1969 Woody Allen mockumentary Take the Money and Run starring Woody Allen, Janet Margolin and Louise Lasser will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library. Coffee & Tea By The Book

Coffee & Tea by the Book will be held at 10 a.m. during National Library Week. Librarians Laura Flanagan and Ann Garnett will moderate a discussion of Alice Hoffman’s The Museum of Extraordinary Things. Mesmerizing and illuminating, This book is the 2015 selection for Long Island Reads. Registration is limited to Garden City Public Library cardholders. Your Widowed Social Group

Your Widowed Social Group is a nonsectarian, nonprofit organization of widows and widowers 50 years plus of age. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month. There is a nominal fee for members and nonmembers. Meetings are held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church located at Franklin Avenue and Fifth Street in Garden City. Library to host world-class vocalists

Friends of the Garden City Public Library will sponsor a concert of “Immortal Love Songs” starring vocalists from Capitol Heights Lyric Opera at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 16 at the Garden City Public Library located at 60 Seventh St., in Garden City. Bass-baritone Richard Cassell and mezzo-soprano Frances Devine will perform a romantic, light-hearted hour of staged duets, scenes and arias from favorites like The Merry Widow, Show Boat, Carmen, La Boheme, The Barber of Seville, Fiddler on the Roof, La Cenerentola, The Marriage of Figaro plus more. Brief entertaining introductions to each number, plus some dancing and dialogue will compliment these beautiful melodies from opera and Broadway.

Bass-baritone Richard Cassell has sung over 100 roles in the USA and internationally in a number of places including Rome, France, Belgium and Bangkok. He has performed concert engagements in the tri-state area including the Taconic Opera, The Center for Contemporary Opera, New York City Opera, New York Lyric Opera and numerous others. Cassell has also directed operas as well as sung and conducted from the piano.

Mezzo-soprano Frances Devine studied voice and theater in Paris, France before moving to New York City, where she performs regularly in concert throughout the tri-state area. She has sung for the Music in Chelsea Series, Capitol Opera Harrisburg, Baystreet Theater and internationally in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and toured in French Guiana.

Garden City residents will be given priority by presenting their Garden City Public Library card at the program room door. Nonresidents will be accommodated on a space available basis 10 minutes before showtime. No saved seats. Limited parking. Please, no buses.
