For the 20th Annual “Teens Speak Up!” public policy conference, Jericho High School senior Tara Silberg advocated for legislation and asked for funding from New York Senators Chuck Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand and Representative Tom Suozzi for the Epilepsy Foundation. Silberg, who was diagnosed with epilepsy last year, was one of 47 teens across the country nominated to participate in the TSU Public Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. Silberg also had a chance to tell her story and relay vital statistics about the numbers of people living here in New York with epilepsy.
“I had no idea how much of a difference I could make in our government,” Silberg says, “It was really amazing to see how teens with epilepsy could work together to get things done.”
Silberg was a former “Town of Oyster Bay Kids with Distinction” award winner. She recently spoke on the Sirius XM show “ Work and Life” where she talked about “going out of her comfort zone” to support epilepsy . She plans on attending college this fall and will continue to advocate on behalf of the epilepsy community.
