Election Guide 2025: Hempstead Town Council Member candidate Dennis Dunne Sr., Rep., Con.

Dennis-Dunne-Sr

Bio
I have served on the Hempstead Town Board since June 2017. Prior to this, I was proud to have represented my community as an original member of the Nassau County Legislature, beginning in 1996 and continuing for 22 years.

I was proud to serve my country as a United States Marine during the Vietnam War, and I have dedicated my life to working on behalf of my fellow veterans in my hometown of Levittown and throughout the Town of Hempstead.

I worked on the Levittown/Island Trees Veterans Council, the Marine Corps Coordinating Council, Disabled American Veterans, the Levittown American Legion and VFW Posts, and many other veteran organizations.

What’s more, I have volunteered as a member of the local Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Ancient Order of
Hibernians, Kiwanis, and Chamber of Commerce.

During my time in the Nassau Legislature and Hempstead Town Board, I have worked to expand tax exemptions and other
benefits programs for veterans. I am a strong believer in serving on behalf of others, whether that be in the military
or in my community.

I received my Associate of Arts degree from Nassau Community College and my Bachelor of Arts degree from Hofstra University in 1979. I have two children and five grandchildren.

Statement on why you are running
Growing up in Levittown, America’s first suburb, I believe I have a unique perspective and appreciation of the American Dream. I have lived the American Dream here in the Town of Hempstead, and I want to ensure that my children and future generations are able to achieve those
same goals.

Supervisor John Ferretti and my colleagues on the Hempstead Town Board are united in this vision of preserving our amazing quality of life, holding the line on taxes, and making our community a better place in which to live, work, and raise a family.

What are the top three issues you’re focused on and what will you do to fix them?
1. Taxes – It is the most important issue for an elected official because it is the most important issue for the constituency. Nobody wants taxes to go up, least of all me as a taxpayer myself.

Fortunately, the Town of Hempstead is proposing a tax-cut budget for 2026, one that reduces the overall levy by $5 million. Supervisor
Ferretti is delivering for taxpayers, just as he did as a member of the Nassau County Legislature.

I am proud to work alongside him as we present a responsible and financially sound budget plan that allows us to continue investing in the future while holding the line on those residents who pay the bills today.

2. Preserving our suburban way of life – People choose to live in the Town of Hempstead for its suburban lifestyle.
We take great pride and care in the Town of Hempstead to ensure that residential neighborhoods, business districts, industrial areas, nature preserves, parks and beaches, school zones, and other locales can live in harmony with one another.

In recent years, Gov. Hochul and Albany Democrats have proposed multiple plans that would force high-density housing projects to
be built in suburban communities like ours. The state was also seeking to strip local municipalities and zoning boards, such as the Town of Hempstead, of their power to oversee such housing projects in their own backyard.

Fortunately, our community came together in overwhelming numbers to fight back against these ideas, which would have devastating impacts on our suburban quality of life.

3. Keeping neighborhoods safe – As a United States Marine, I believe I always have a duty to serve my fellow citizens and keep them safe. During my two decades as a member of the Nassau Legislature, I worked closely with the men and women of law enforcement.

Fast-forward to 2025, and I am disheartened by how often we need to call on our police. We have seen multiple acts of hate, disturbing rhetoric, and even acts of violence against Jewish people and other residents in the Town of Hempstead.

But unlike New York City, our community does not tolerate crime and bigotry. We have a town supervisor, county executive, district
attorney, police officers, and patriotic residents who are not afraid to stand up for the rule of law. I include myself in that group, and I promise to always “back the blue” and protect my fellow citizens.
