A piece of the past is about to be unearthed at Guggenheim Elementary School.

On Tuesday, Nov. 18, the school will open its Year 2000 Time Capsule, which has been sealed inside the Guggenheim Library for the past 25 years. The event will take place from 3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the school’s All-Purpose Room, marking a long-awaited moment for alumni, staff, and community members.

The capsule, created by students and teachers at the turn of the millennium, was “buried” in 2000 with artifacts representing life at Guggenheim and the world at the time. Now a quarter-century later, the school community will gather to see what memories and mementos were left behind.

Organizers say the event will be part celebration, part reunion, offering a chance for former students to reconnect, reminisce, and reflect on how much has changed since their elementary school days.

Guggenheim Principal Kim Licato said she has invited the principal from the year 2000 to attend the event and help unveil the material.

“We can’t wait to see what memories await inside,” school officials said in an announcement. “It’s a chance to step back in time and celebrate our shared history.”

The time capsule’s unveiling comes as Guggenheim continues its legacy as one of Port Washington’s cornerstone elementary schools. Staff said the event will not only highlight the school’s rich history but also inspire current students to think about the future — and perhaps start planning the next time capsule for generations to come.

Community members and alumni are invited to attend the celebration and join in commemorating this nostalgic milestone in Guggenheim history.
