The Port Washington Police District has awarded a construction contract for its new headquarters to Aurora Contractors, a Long Island-based construction management and general contracting firm, officials announced Thursday, March 12. The contract is contingent on the fulfillment of certain conditions.
Aurora Contractors, founded in 1983, has managed large-scale commercial, residential, institutional, and hospitality projects across the New York metropolitan area. Notable projects include the expansion of Jake’s 58 Casino & Hotel in Islandia and the Belmont Park Retail Village at UBS.
“We are pleased to award this contract to a construction firm that has a proven track record of delivering high-quality projects throughout our region,” said Sean McCarthy, chairman of the district’s Board of Commissioners. “Aurora Contractors brings a depth of experience and professionalism that will ensure this project is completed efficiently and to the highest standards, all while remaining on budget.”
Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026, starting with site preparation and foundation work. The district has already completed key preparatory steps, including demolition of former structures on the site and environmental remediation.
Demolition on the former Knowles Funeral Home property and adjacent vacant homes began Wednesday, Oct. 29, with full demolition scheduled to start Nov. 3.
The new 25,000-square-foot headquarters is designed to replace the current facility at 500 Port Washington Blvd., which was built in 1958 for 35 officers and staff but now houses 64 officers and 15 civilian employees. The older building suffers from overcrowding, outdated technology, insufficient parking, and inadequate facilities for female officers.
A recently approved $32 million bond will fund the project, with an estimated cost of $150.71 annually for the average homeowner in Port Washington. A Project Labor Agreement with the Long Island Building Trades Council will ensure skilled labor and maintain high standards throughout construction.
“This project represents an investment in the future of public safety in Port Washington,” McCarthy said. “A modern facility will provide our officers and staff with the tools and space they need to serve the community effectively while also creating a welcoming and functional environment for residents.”
