Jericho High School is proud to announce that a team of sophomores has been named a regional winner of the 2026 ExploraVision, one of the nation’s most prestigious science and technology competitions, for their project titled “ReACT-SHM: Responsive Concrete Technology.”
A special award ceremony will be held at Jericho High School on Thursday, March 25, at 12 p.m., where representatives from Toshiba will join the school community to formally recognize the student team and their achievement.
The award-winning team — Richard Nie, Jay Patel, Reyansh Raut, and Rayan Hasan — worked under the guidance of coach Alexis Vandergoot and mentor Samantha Sforza to develop an innovative solution to transform the future of infrastructure safety.
Their project reimagines traditional structural health monitoring systems by introducing a responsive, self-mitigating concrete technology. By combining advanced sensing systems with intelligent nanoscale agents, their design detects early signs of structural damage and actively works to slow deterioration — ultimately improving safety, reducing maintenance costs, and extending the lifespan of critical infrastructure.
In addition to the regional win, Jericho High School was recognized for its extraordinary student participation and innovation, earning 14 honorable mentions in the competition. These projects explored a wide range of cutting-edge topics, including medical advancements, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and environmental sustainability.
Jericho High School’s honorable mention projects include:
- Development of Enhanced Fast Neutron Reactors
- Type VII Collagen Bonds for Epidermolysis Bullosa
- FibroGuide: Regenerative Skin Repair
- Tau Dephosphorylator
- VEXA: Bio-Integrated System for PAD Care
