New Hyde Park has presented its tentative 2026/2027 budget, trustees announced at their March 19 board meeting.
The total tentative budget is $8,157,852, a 2.46% increase of $195,850 over last year’s adopted budget.
Deputy Mayor Madhvi Nijjar said the budget includes an estimated 1.999% tax levy increase over last year’s budget. She said, based on average home value assessments across the village, this would translate into a tentative tax increase estimate of $35 to $37.
“We came in under the tax cap, which we’re proud of,” Mayor Chris Devane said. “We kept it under the tax cap as we’re finishing the refurbishment of DPW, we’re opening a new park, Sakowich Park, on the south side, we’ve redone Village Hall, and we have a new community center being built next door.”
The community center he refers to is Marcus Christ Hall, whose completion has been pushed back from April to July, the mayor said.
Over the past four years, the village has increased its revenue from around $61,000 in the 2022/2023 actual budget to $125,000 in this year’s tentative budget.
The mayor said the state comptroller’s office held an annual evaluation of the village’s financial stress for the year 2025. The score, ranging from zero to 25, ranks municipalities by their fiscal stress. A lower score means less financial stress on the local government.
New Hyde Park received a ranking of 3.3, according to state comptroller data. The Nassau County average is 5.1.
Devane said the village has received a score of 3.3 over the past three years, despite large-scale projects such as park renewal, upgrades to public works facilities and resurfacing municipal lots.
At the board meeting, trustees approved several resolutions, including contract agreements with D&B for assisting the village in maintaining adherence to state mandates on stormwater discharge and sewer systems, and with Long Island Geese Control, for what the mayor called “safe and humane removal” of geese from Memorial Park.
Trustees also approved public field uses for the New Hyde Park Little League and Notre Dame Catholic School.
The board approved several landscaping permit renewals and two new landscaping permits for Valley Landscaping LLC and WJ Brothers Landscaping Inc.
Trustees also voted to renew licenses for Long Island Waste Services LLC and the Angry Gnome Pub.
