Workshop for Breast Cancer Patients
A free workshop, Simplifying and Organizing Your Lifestyle, is offered to those who have had breast cancer from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The workshop, sponsored by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is held at Adelphi University’s Alumni House in Garden City. This session will examine various aspects of everyday life and provide solutions to make life less complicated. Home and personal organization strategies will enable participants to take charge of their time and space, tame clutter, reduce stress and save money. Participants are encouraged to bring their organizing questions to this interactive discussion. The instructor is Marguerite Barone, MA, PD. Call 877-4325.

Blood Drive
Nassau Community College, in conjunction with Nassau University Medical Center, will host its 15th annual Midwinter Blood Drive from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in Building K on the NCC campus. NCC invites members of the community to join our efforts and become donors at our College site. Make an appointment to give blood by calling Barbara Vollmer or Dr. Friedman at 572-7883, or just stop in. Light refreshments will be served to participants. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old and in good health. Donors should come with some personal identification and eat before donating.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island will feature Maggie Hoffman at a workshop from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Epilepsy Foundation, 506 Stewart Ave. Ms. Hoffman is director of Chronic Care (Project DOCC) and founding member of the Self Determination Coalition. Project DOCC (Delivery of Chronic Care) is a unique medical education program in which parents teach pediatric and family practice residents, and other health professionals. Westbury Friends School invites parents of school-age children to an Admissions Open House and International Pot Luck Feast. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however preregistration is required. For information, questions, or to sign up, call Sandi Kafenbaum 877-4314 or the Breast Cancer Hotline 800-877-8077. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. The following groups are offered:
• Women Newly Diagnosed with Breast Cancer – An evening group will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m., tentatively beginning on Jan. 26.
• Single Women – An evening group will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m., tentatively beginning Jan. 26.
• Women Post-treatment –An evening group will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m., tentatively beginning Jan. 25.
• Women with Metastatic Breast Cancer – Monday evenings – An ongoing evening group from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
• Women with Breast Cancer – A daytime group will meet weekly for eight weeks, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., tentatively beginning on Jan. 26.
• The Close Knit Group – A knit and talk group for women with breast cancer. A daytime ongoing group meets monthly on Tuesday afternoons from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.
Community Emergency Response Team
The CERT Program educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response and recovery skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. The training will give you some peace of mind, help you, your family and your community. Everyone can help and anyone can be a valuable team member. Becoming a CERT member is interesting, fun and free. Start with basic training and build your knowledge through ongoing training classes and hands-on exercises. Nassau North Shore Christian Women’s Club

Interpreter Service Workshop
The Long Island Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (LIRID) and Mill Neck Interpreter Service of Hicksville present a workshop entitled How Do I Interpret This and That? Presented by Jimmy Beldon in American Sign Language, the workshop will be held on Jan. 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Nassau Community College in the CCB building, room 252. Beldon will provide an in-depth and practical understanding of skills for interpreters in both ASL and English. Participants will learn tips, receive feedback and have opportunities to take part in effective activities. Open to working interpreters, the workshop will earn participants 0.6 Continuing Education Units. Accommodations are available upon request. Registration deadline is Jan. 16. Fee is $50 per LIRID member; $75 per nonmember. Breakfast and lunch will be included compliments of LIRID. Voice interpreter services will not be available. Through the Recovery International process, members learn to manage stress, panic, anxiety, depression, anger, irrational fears, phobias, compulsions, obsessions and other emotional or behavioral problems.
