A Syosset man was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and Reckless Endangerment on Wednesday, June 9 after taking a joyride in Plainview at 110 miles an hour.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, at approximately 3 a.m., an officer from the Highway Patrol Bureau was monitoring westbound traffic on the Long Island Expressway at exit 46 when he observed a grey 2005 Maserati passing motorists in excess of 110 MPH in a posted 55MPH zone.
According to police, the officer was able to stop the vehicle at exit 44 and during the subsequent investigation ascertained that the operator, Joseph Carbone of Syosset, 49, was driving while intoxicated. Carbone had great difficulty completing the sobriety test, and refused to take a breathalyzer test, police added. The defendant was arrested and transported to the Central Testing Section for processing. The vehicle was seized by the Asset Forfeiture and Intelligence Unit.
According to Kevin Smith of the Nassau County Police Department, Carbone made many comments typical of those under the influence of a large amount of alcohol. When the officer told Carbone that he had been driving at a speed of 110 MPH, the defendant responded that the officer should check his equipment, because he was actually driving at 130 MPH, Smith said. He also made comments about having consumed different kinds of alcohol, Smith added.
While there was no property damage or personal injury, Smith said that the situation could have easily ended in disaster, even at 3 a.m. “That road is never that empty,” he said.
Carbone, a financial consultant, has been arrested twice for DWI in the past ten years, police noted.
The defendant was charged with Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree, DWI, Reckless Driving and Driving in Excess of 55 MPH. He was arraigned in First District Court on June 9.
