Mayor’s Report: July 19, 2011

Village Hall Blood Drive

The Long Island Blood Services in conjunction with the employees at Village Hall will be holding a Blood Drive on Wednesday, July 20, from 1 to 7 p.m. in the second floor meeting room of the Fire Department Headquarters Building on Stewart Avenue. The need for blood has again reached a critical level so please consider donating. For every pint of blood donated three patients are helped. Exponentially, the village as a whole can and will help more people than imagined.

For more information, or to schedule an appointment to donate blood, please contact the Human Resources Department at Village Hall (465-4170).

Did you know that over 800 units of blood are needed each and every day of the year to meet the needs of patients in Long Islands 43-plus hospitals?

Noise Ordinance

It is particularly distressing to see a few residents marring the beauty of our village by not adhering to the Village Code as it relates to noise. Residents are reminded to inform landscape gardeners and construction workers of the laws which are frequently violated:

• Power gardening, lawn maintenance and building construction equipment may not be operated in the village between 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Concert at Gazebo

Once again, compliments are due to the Recreation Department for arranging the 2011 season’s outstanding Concert Series at the Village Gazebo, located on the Village Green at the corner of Stewart and Hilton avenues.

Next week’s program is scheduled for Thursday, July 21 and will feature The Tercels – singing your favorite oldies.

The program will begin at 7:15 p.m. and admission is free. Please bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a very pleasant evening. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall at the St. Paul’s School.

Parking Field #12 — East Side of Franklin Avenue Between 12th and 14th Streets

Work in Parking Field #12 continues. This work is being done in four phases with each phase lasting approximately three to four weeks. The current phase, Phase #1, is north of Thirteenth Street, encompassing a portion of the northern half of the lot. Phase #1 is scheduled to be ropened on Thursday, July 21 with Phase #2 being closed on that day. Phase #2 consists of the other portion on the northern half of the parking field. Please do not park within the construction zone and take note of any temporary parking restrictions that are posted by the Police Department. Additional parking can be found in Parking Field #11 (west of Franklin Avenue) and in Parking Field #9E (south of Eleventh Street). We thank everyone for their patience during this much needed infrastructure improvement.

If you have any questions, please contact the Garden City Public Works Department at (516) 465-4004 (Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.)

Curb, Sidewalk and Road Improvements

Infrastructure improvements will be done throughout the village this summer. Streets scheduled for work are Plaza Road, Main Avenue, 15th Street, Boylston Street, Tremont Street, Spruce Street, Prescott Street and Bedell Avenue. During construction, detours should be expected at these locations. Residents in these areas will be given notice ahead of the start of construction. Work will begin very soon starting on Spruce Street, Prescott Street and Plaza Road.

Main Avenue Water Main Improvement Project

Work continues on the Water Main Improvement Project along Main Avenue and is about 60 percent completed. Throughout this project lane closures and detours should be expected along Main Avenue. Any loss of water that was not outlined in the notice to residents should be reported to the Water Department. The water main trenches will be restored and paved in preparation for street surfacing. This work is expected to continue for approximately two to three more weeks.

Board of Trustees’ Summer Meeting Schedule

During July and August the board of trustees will meet once a month. The dates are Thursday, July 21 and Thursday, Aug. 18 at 8 p.m.

Village’s Website

I encourage residents to periodically utilize the village’s website for information regarding the village’s operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.gardencityny.net. For your convenience, listed on the village’s homepage under the heading of Administration is a link which lists the various village board and commissions along with their meeting dates and agendas.
