Garrett McNamara, a big wave surfer, broke the world record for the largest wave ever surfed. The wave was an estimated 90 feet.

“Garrett McNamara breaks the world record for the largest wave ever surfed,” read a report on his blog. “Garrett was towed into a rogue wave in Portugal, at the North Canyon.”

The surfer caught the behemoth in Praia do Norte, Nazare, Portugal during a two month stay for the Zon North Canyon Project 2011.

According to Surfer Today, this was not the first time that Garrett McNamara rode giant waves at Praia do Norte, which is under the influence of a phenomenon known as “Nazaré Canyon” that creates unusual giant waves.

“I feel so blessed and honoured to have been invited to explore this canyon and its special town. The waves here are such a mystery,” Garrett told Surfer Today.

McNamara knocked out the previous world record, according to Gizmodo, which was set by Mike Parsons in 2008 when he rode a 77-foot wave.
