Create Something Great Recycled Sculpture Contest

create

createPortledge School and the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center are proud to co-sponsor the Second Create Something GreatSM Recycled Sculpture Contest.  We are encouraging students in pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade to build sculptures made out of recycled and/or reusable materials designed around the theme of nocturnal animals, such as bats, fireflies, raccoons, owls, skunks, and tarantulas.   This contest is a hands-on learning experience for budding young artists to pique their curiosity about art, wildlife and environmental issues.

Children compete in three categories:  Pre-Kindergarten – First grade; Second – Third grades; and Fourth – Sixth grades.    Awards will be given within each assigned age category based on overall aesthetic value and creative use of recycled materials.  Prizes for each category include: first place $100 gift certificate for arts & crafts supplies, second place $50 gift certificate for arts & crafts supplies, and third place $25 gift certificate for arts & crafts supplies.

Details about the contest and registration information are available at www.portledge.org/createsomethinggreat.   Registration forms must be received by Friday, March 16, 2012.  Sculptures must be hand delivered to the Portledge Lower School main office on Thursday, March 29 or Friday, March 30 between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

All sculptures will be on display and award winners will be announced during a special art reception to be held on Saturday, March 31st from 1:30p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Portledge Lower School.  All participants in attendance will receive a certificate.  Following the reception with participants and their families, professionals from the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center will show live animals from the sanctuary in Oyster Bay.  Plus, there will be hands-on science and arts & crafts stations.  Afterwards, award winning sculptures will be transported to the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center for a second art display April 2nd – April 6th, open to the public noon – 4 p.m.
