St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner and McDonald’s is treating its loyal customers to a holiday treat this month. The favored fast food chain will be offering a special green shake dubbed the Shamrock Shake to one and all.

The shake is nothing new, in fact, it’s been around for a while. The first Shamrock Shake launched in 1970.

The minty green treat began with Philadelphia Eagles tight end Fred Hill’s 3-year-old daughter, Kim, who was being treated for leukemia in 1974, he pushed for the promotion and according to the fast food chain, the shake ended up as a special week-long promotion with all profits to be donated to the cause.

Since it was first released, it’s quickly become a favorite among McDonald’s customers with a reported “cult-like” following. Customers have been flocking far and wide to select stores that sold the special St. Patricks’s Day treat.

The only problem was that the shake wasn’t offered to all. But this year, in holiday spirit and by popular demand, things are changing and the shake is going to be available nationally for the very first time.

McDonald’s Corp will offer the minty green milkshake honoring St. Patrick’s Day in all 14,000 restaurants nationwide. Last year, McDonald’s said about half its stores offered the shake, reported Washington Post.

The shake is seasonal, only available in the few weeks leading up to St. Patrick’s Day and ending March 25.

The beloved shake costs almost $2 and is 540 calories and 16 grams of fat for a small, 680 calories and 20 grams of fat for a medium or 840 calories and 24 grams of fat for a large. It’s made of reduced fat vanilla ice cream, syrup and whipped cream.
