Our Lady of Victory School kicked off it’s Catholic Schools Week celebration with a standing-room only opening mass on Sunday, Jan. 26. Pastor Father John O’Farrell’s homily emphasized the very important relationship between Our Lady of Victory Church and it’s parish school, stating, “OLV School is the heart of the parish – it’s what makes it beat.”
Floral Park Mayor Tom Tweedy, introduced by OLV School Board President Kerry Boyle, presented OLV School Principal Peg Augello with a proclamation acknowledging Catholic Schools Week.
Mayor Tweedy is himself a member of OLV School’s Class of 1970. The children’s choir, led by Donna Lindskog with musical accompaniment by Don Lefante, sang beautifully throughout the mass – as they do every Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
OLV school’s motto is “Where Faith and Knowledge Meet.” Mrs. Augello, in describing the reality of Catholic education at OLV School every day, stated, “As our children explore the wonders of our world, they learn not just about the water cycle, but also about the creator who made the rain, the rivers and the sea.”
A very spirited and bustling open house of the school followed the mass, where current and future students, and their families, toured the building, met with teachers, marveled at the SMARTBoards in all the classrooms and enjoyed a mini-concert by the school’s band.
The $10,000 giveaway, overseen by Kathi Insingo, was drawn and the winners were announced to a hearty crowd.
The school’s thanks go out to all throughout the parish who bought raffle tickets and showed their support. Catholic Schools Week Sunday was, once again, a proud day at Our Lady of Victory School.
