The Mineola Village Board selected Mineola-based Web Construction last week to handle the handicap bathroom installation at Wilson Park. Web bid $425,000 for the project.
Web originally bid $483,800. Village officials met with the contractor recently, discussing bid submissions and reviewed Mineola’s estimates. Being the only bidder, Mineola was within legal rights to meet with the contractor to negotiate the $58,800, officials said.
“Through negotiation, we were able to have [Web] take a look at the numbers and he was able to reduce those numbers,” Public Works Superintendent Tom Rini said.
The bathroom plan is part of a longstanding project to revamp the Wilson Park snack stand. The concession building has been shuttered since a building fire in 2011. Officials announced October 2014 that they expect the new stand to open in the spring of 2015.
Mayor Strauss said previously that vending machines would be installed and accessible year-round, rather than just for the summer season.
“It’s more than just the bathrooms,” Mayor Scott Strauss said.
The project is mainly funded through community development block grants. These grants are made available to villages to improve the lives of residents in both public and private spaces. More than $190,000 is earmarked for the Wilson Park project.
