On Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28, the Manhasset High School Varsity Ice Hockey Team competed in the New York State championships at Twin Rinks in Eisenhower Park. The team clinched its spot in the state championships and the Nassau County championships by beating Bellmore-Merrick on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at the last game of the regular season.
After winning the state championships in the Open Division last year, Manhasset competed in a very competitive large school/small school division this year which included the top four teams from the Buffalo area. Unfortunately, the Buffalo teams won the state championships in both divisions this year.
Overall, Manhasset had a very successful season. It was also successful in a handful of non-league games, including a win vs. Chaminade. The team’s success was the result of talent and teamwork. Long time Coaches Kevin Smith and Mike O’Gara provided expert instruction and guidance throughout the season. Although Manhasset Hockey is losing ten seniors next year, the strength of the sophomores, juniors and upcoming freshman should keep the program strong for many years to come.
Congratulations to the team on a successful season and good luck to our Seniors in all of their future endeavors.
