Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently recognized Sewanhaka High School graduate and rising sophomore at Towson University Meghan Carroll for earning the Gold Award, the highest and most prestigious award within the Girl Scouts Movement. The Gold Award also requires the completion of 80-hours or more of an individual leadership project that makes an impact on an important issue or need in the community.
“Earning the Gold Award is an incredible achievement that only five percent of all Girl Scouts nationwide obtain,” said Donna Ceravolo, executive director and CEO of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County.
This recognizes Scouts for leadership skills and excellence. It must be completed before or during their senior year of high school.
Carroll’s Girl Scout Gold Award Take Action Project, Adopt-A-Grandparent, served to improve the quality of life of elderly and Alzheimer’s patients. While completing her Silver Award project at Parker Geriatric Center at LIJ, she was touched by the residents who didn’t have visitors. She enlisted the help of students from her school’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) to visit nursing homes. Since she graduated high school, the FCCLA has continued Adopt-A-Grandparent and is now a permanent project for the chapter.
