Currently appearing in the period crime drama The Alienist as lead character Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, Daniel Brühl is an internationally renowned actor who got his start in the mid-1990s German soap opera Forbidden Love. Since then, Brühl has made his mark in a number of films including The Bourne Ultimatum, Inglorious Basterds and Captain America: Civil War.

With fluency in several languages, including Spanish and German, the Barcelona native is enthusiastic about playing the Hungarian-German Kreizler in this current project, which is based on the 1994 Caleb Carr novel of the same name.

“…It is a fascinating portrayal of New York City at the time, with very compelling characters,” Brühl said.

Here, Brühl shares some of his favorite roles.

Alex Kerner of Good-Bye Lenin! (2003)

TheAlienistSidebar 020918GoodbyeLenin“That was my first major role in a German movie and I was very pleased that it was internationally acclaimed and was liked by so many people. I learned so much about Germany. Growing up in West Germany, it made me fall in love with Berlin. I’m still very good friends with the director. For me, emotionally, that was a very important film in my life.”

Niki Lauda of Rush (2013)

I had the honor to work with Ron Howard, who is a legend and Peter Morgan, who is one of the smartest scriptwriters that I ever met. It was a part that was really far away for me that was set in a world that was unknown to me. To explore it was fantastic.”

Laszlo Kreizler of The Alienist (2017)

TheAlienistSidebar 020918TheAlienist”This show is my first TV show. I felt incredibly honored to be offered this part because it’s a big, big show for a lot of money. I’ve never done something like this on such a scale. It felt like three cinema movies. It didn’t feel like a TV show. That was a very inspiring experience from the beginning to the end.”

The Alienist airs on TNT on Monday nights.
