The Town of Hempstead has created a dedicated surf area at Lido Beach.Surfers can now ride the waves at Hempstead Town’s Lido Beach at its dedicated “surf area” located to the right of the mushrooms by ANCHOR (Answering the Needs of Citizens with Handicaps through Organized Recreation). The new surfing area, previously known as “anchor boogie,” will be staffed and open all summer.
“The surf is up at Lido Beach,” said Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney. “Surfing has gained popularity world-wide, and the Town of Hempstead is proud to be at the forefront of increasing accessibility for surfers to enjoy their sport.”
From competitive and veteran surfers to recreational and first-timers, the new surf area will meet the needs of everyone. In past years, the area was often utilized by the ANCHOR program for surfing activities for campers. ANCHOR is a comprehensive year-round program serving 1,200 children and adults with special needs. By opening up the area to all surfers, the town is encouraging the sport, and the tremendous benefits it provides to every enthusiast. A dedicated surf bay has already been designated at Lido West Town Beach, where surfers can enjoy some of the best surfing in the country.
“Surfing is among the oldest sports on earth and for many it is a way of life as much as it is a sport,” added King Sweeney. “I encourage all of our surfers to take advantage of this new dedicated area at Hempstead Town’s beautiful Lido Beach Town Park.
