Rachel Hersh, owner of flora in Westhampton Beach and part of Rooted Hospitality Group, blends hospitality with heart. As a PSEG Long Island Small Business Star, she shares how sustainability, community impact, and team growth are at the core of everything she and her Rooted Hospitality Group team do.

What do you love about being in this business/being an owner?

There’s so much to love, but at the heart of it all, it’s the people. Creating spaces where guests feel joy, connection and celebrate everyday moments is special but supporting and watching our team grow is truly the most rewarding part.

How do you feel your business impacts the local community?

We take so much pride in being more than just restaurants, we aim to be community hubs. Whether it’s sourcing local, recycling oyster shells, mentoring students or partnering with organizations that align with our values, we’re always looking for ways to give back. Flora’s Green Restaurant Association certification is just the start and we’re committed to extending those sustainable practices throughout our entire group. Because we believe doing good and serving great food go hand in hand.

How did PSEG Long Island’s Business First Program support you?

PSEG’s support truly helped us grow more intentionally. With their guidance and partnership, we were able to replace outdated light fixtures with more energy-efficient alternatives. These changes not only reduced our environmental impact and operating costs but also aligned perfectly with our long-term sustainability goals.

What role do you think small businesses play in promoting energy efficiency within the broader community?

Small businesses are the heartbeat of our towns and when we lead by example, it makes a ripple. When guests see that we’re committed to sustainability, it sparks conversations and awareness. We have this unique opportunity to show that even small, everyday decisions can make a big impact.

How do you feel about being a Small Business Star?

There are so many hardworking small businesses on this island, so to be recognized is humbling. It makes me proud of our teams and the community that’s supported us every step of the way.
