In association with the Parent Faculty Association, Heights, East Hills and Harbor Hill elementary schools brought reading to life during Pick a Reading Partner Week, featuring a playful monster theme and daily activities designed to inspire a love of reading among students.

Students participated in creative, literacy-focused activities that encouraged imagination, storytelling and family engagement.

On Friday, Jan. 9, administrators from across the district visited classrooms at Heights as mystery readers, sharing the book “Harold and the Purple Crayon” by Crockett Johnson.

On Wednesday, Jan. 14, East Hills students welcomed mystery readers who read aloud “A Bad Case of the Almost” by Janet Sumner Johnson. Administrators participating in the read-alouds included Superintendent Allison Brown and Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education Michael Goldspiel.

Throughout the week, students crafted their own monsters using materials found at home, wrote original monster stories inspired by a visit from author Daniel Miller and personalized e-Pledge bookmarks to “monsterfy” their reading experience.

Families were invited to share cozy reading time together, and the week concluded with a Pajama Day, during which students enjoyed reading, relaxing and playful activities in comfortable clothing.
