The Jericho community is mourning the loss of Melissa Xenakis, a speech pathologist who died on Wednesday, March 11, after “suffering a catastrophic medical crisis,” Superintendent of Jericho Schools Robert L. Kravitz said in a statement. The cause of death has not been released. Xenakis was 45 years old.
“Our deepest sympathies are with Melissa’s family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives she touched,” Kravitz said.
Counseling and support services for Jericho students and staff are now available, Kravitz said.
The obituary for Xenakis by the McCourt & Trudden Funeral Home said, “Melissa’s greatest joy was becoming a mother to her sons, Henry (Hank), age 5, and Nathan (Nate), age 3, who were the center of her world. She loved them deeply and worked tirelessly to create meaningful and exciting experiences for them, always wanting their lives to be filled with joy, learning, and special memories.”
An entry for an online tribute board dedicated to Xenakis states, “Throughout her career in education, Melissa demonstrated a natural talent for connecting with young minds, inspiring curiosity, and fostering a supportive learning environment. Her dedication to teaching went beyond the classroom; she instilled values of respect, empathy, and perseverance in her students, leaving a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.”
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 17, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the McCourt & Trudden Funeral Home in Farmingdale. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 19, at 9:45 a.m. at the St Kilian RC Church in Farmingdale.
